Rules
All models entered must adhere to the principles of plastic scale model making in accordance with IPMS guidelines, and therefore make use of either proprietary plastic or multimedia kits and accessories or scratch built using plastic as the major construction material.
Models may be displayed in appropriate settings, relevant to their prototypical use, e.g. runways, sea, roads, countryside. Crew and equipment may be provided but must be affixed either on or in the model and not on the models base, where they will be classed as a diorama (see below).
A diorama is defined where the model is displayed on a base with supporting equipment, buildings and figures adjacent (as well as on or in) to the model.
Figure models may be displayed on an appropriate base with scenery relevant to the subject model. Models with more than one figure included will be classed as a diorama.
Accessories may be used to enhance, detail or convert the model. Details of the use of these must be explained on the competition entry form.
Junior entrants must provide the age of the modeller.
Models may be submitted to the competition tables from 10.30 until 12.30. Entries will not be accepted once judging starts.
Entry to the Senior competitions (Classes 1 through 10 ) will be subject to a £1 entry fee. Entry to the Junior competition (Class 11) will be free.
Models that have been entered into previous NewMod competitions will not be eligible for entry into the 2012 competition.
Judging
Models will be judged in accordance with the model making process, the objective being to award points for the modellers abilities as demonstrated in the model, and to reward skill and imagination rather than to compete against other models (which may not be comparable).
Points will be awarded for the following criteria:
- Choice of subject – where the model is judged on the basis of the levels of novelty and originality involved in selecting the subject.
- Assembly – where the model is judged on the basis of how well it has been assembled, and will consider visibility of join lines and gaps.
- Enhancement, conversion and detailing – where points will be awarded on the basis of application of any conversion or detailing work carried out, and how well this has been applied.
- Painting, weathering and finish – where the model is painted and weathered in a finish relevant to the prototype (where applicable), the mediums used and skill in application.
- Display and presentation – where the model is judged on the basis of its mounting, presentation and display in realistic, relevant and appropriate surroundings, and the application of the techniques used to achieve this.
Points between 0 and 5 for each criteria will be awarded for each model.
The winner will be the model accruing the most points against the above. To assist the judges (who may not be model builders) in their task, it is important to ensure that as much information relating to the model is provided on the entry form.
Judges will be selected impartially, and may consist of guests of the club, traders, or members of the public.
The judge’s decision will be final.
Awards
Following judging against the above criteria, awards will be made in each of the nice classes as follows:
- Gold Medal – Class Winner
- Silver Medal – Class runner up
- Bronze Medal – Class runner up
All class winners, including the Class 11 Junior winner, will automatically be entered into the ‘Best in Show’ where they will be judged again. The best model in the Judge’s view will be awarded the ‘Best in Show’ trophy.
Timetable
Models may be submitted to the competition tables from 10.30 until 12.30.
Judging will take place between 13.00 and 15.00.
Competition results will be announced at 15.00.
